The holidays are upon us and I’m hearing how stressed out everyone is. Just yesterday alone, I heard 4 people tell me how overwhelmed they feel. They told me that their ‘To-Do’ lists are long and their already full plates are even fuller.

Why do people get so stressed this time of year?

First, we conclude that the holidays are stressful and we therefore create tons of evidence to prove this to be true. You hear it all of the time. “Wow! The holidays are so stressful!”, or “This is the most stressful time of year for me.” It’s important to know that where you place your attention is what you experience. Therefore, place attention on what you want versus what you don’t want or fear.

Second, we believe that we are “obligated” to do, buy, make, etc. and that we have “responsibilities” to take care of. Isn’t that interesting because no one is pointing a gun at your head and saying, “You must do this or you will die now!” The truth is, you are actually choosing it all. You were not born with obligation and responsibilities. These are beliefs that are learned from your parents, schools, religions, society, etc. “Choosing” to do something feels much lighter than “having to do” something. Therefore, just by re-framing what you say to yourself begins the de-stressing process.

Research shows that it only takes just a couple of minutes of meditation to still the mind and create more peace throughout your day. So, let’s dump some holiday stress now and begin a quick, yet effective, calming meditation. Sit in a comfortable chair and plant your feel firmly on the floor. Have your spine erect yet relaxed. Put your hands on your lap with palms up.

Inhale deeply as if you are filling up your head with your breath. Hold your breath and notice the stillness at the top of your inhale … exhale and let your thoughts flow down your arms and out your fingertips. (Repeat 2 more times…) Good, you are beginning to calm the mind…

Inhale deeply and fill up your lungs to open your heart center. Hold your breath and notice the quiet energy at the top of your inhale…exhale and let your stress flow down your arms and out your fingertips. (Repeat 2 more times…) Feel yourself getting more relaxed with each breath…

Inhale deeply and fill up your belly to anchor your energy. Hold your breath and notice the energy vibration at the top of your inhale…exhale and release the stagnant energy from your body by letting it flow down your legs and out your toes. (Repeat 2 more times…) There, you really are letting go now. Good for you.
